Atlantic Canada - Cabot Trail
Named for famous explorer John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto), Cabot Trail is
probably the most scenic drive in Nova Scotia. For nearly 300 km (185 mi)
it winds around the north shore of Cape Breton Island, the large portion
of it circling the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. At places, the road
cuts into steep sides of mountains that rise above the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Numerous lookouts by the roadside provide stunning vistas of the rugged
coastline and rich stands of the Acadian forest. In fall, the highlands
are mecca for photographers and hikers alike, who admire the vibrant palette
of nature's reds, oranges, and golds. The best time to visit is in few weeks
around the Canadian Thanksgiving.
