Results from the Picture It photography course
I the fall of 2013 I ran a seven-week photography course for novice and intermediate – level photographers. We had an in-class session once a week (Wednesday evenings) and went outside as a group one Sunday afternoon to practice what we had learned in the classroom. We covered the following topics in the class: basic concepts of digital photography, fundamentals of exposure and camera controls, use of lenses, composition, light in the landscape (with a demonstration of flash use), colour theory and use of filters, image processing and archiving. I set up several assignments and we...

Fireworks display lit up the night sky during the 6th annual PotashCorp Fireworks Festival in Saskatoon last Friday and Saturday. The fireworks were launched from the Broadway Bridge in downtown Saskatoon. Royal Pyrotechnie lit up the skies on Friday, and ProFX Inc. were in charge on Saturday. ProFX Inc. has delivered the fireworks show for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games as well as four Grey Cups. I was lucky enough to get access to one of the tall buildings right next to the Delta Bessborough hotel and had a great view of the show. Here are a few images from the Friday performance. I...

Last weekend I went down to the Saskatoon River Landing with my coffee buddies Rick Elvin, Bas Hobson, Bob Littlejohn and Scott Prokop to photograph watercross races on the South Saskatchewan River. Watercross is an unusual sport – it can best be described as motocross on water jet skis. Riders zoom around an obstacle course at speeds up to 100 kilometres per hour. About 36 top racers from Canada and the USA took part in the 2013 Western Canadian Watercross Nationals. The program also included a wakeboarding demonstration (surf boarding on a wake produced by a speed boat that pulls the...

The Nature in the City art exhibit of nature photographs and paintings featuring works of five Saskatoon artists will be on display at the Centre at Circle and Eight Galley in Saskatoon until July 7, 2013. Three of my plant images from the Meet Your Neighbours project are on display, together with works by Louise Cook, Robin and Arlene Karpan, May Haga and Nick Saunders. This exhibit was set up to coincide with the week-long festival Wild About Saskatoon, to celebrate nature and culture in the City of Saskatoon. We set up the art exhibit in a heavily visited area, in a shopping mall right...

Saskatoon trees are in bloom this week. The name of this tree (well, more of a shrub) derives from the Cree noun ‘misâskwatômina’. The city of Saskatoon is named after the berry. Have you ever tried the Saskatoon berry pie? Delicious. I took a few images you see here as part of the NatureCity Festival that starts today. Over 40 organizations are taking part in setting up nature-related events. The NatureCity Festival is one week of free family fun that takes place in neighbourhoods across the city of Saskatoon. It is the inaugural event of Wild about Saskatoon, a...
