A large area of open sand dunes is located about 18 km south of the village of Sceptre (near Leader, Saskatchewan). Follow the signs to “Wildlife viewing area” and park in the designated parking area right next to a large complex of sand dunes. Ranch buildings at the Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area. Photographed one calm evening in June. One of the buildings houses a beautiful interpretive centre with stories on history of the ranch and information about wildlife that can be found on the Northern Great Plains of southern Saskatchewan. Nature Conservancy of Canada is managing this 13,135 acre (5,316 hectare) property in effort to protect a piece of fragile mixed prairie grasslands.
