This post is a tribute to world rivers, in anticipation of the World Rivers Day on September 29th, 2013. Communities in Canada and around the world are planning events to acknowledge the contribution of river systems to human well-being, raise awareness of the importance of river conservation and to encourage positive river stewardship. The World Rivers Day in celebrated annually throughout the world, and it is estimated that several million people in 60 countries will help mark this special occasion.
The Saskatchewan Eco Network and several local community and environmental organizations are leading public events to celebrate the World Rivers Day and South Saskatchewan River flowing through Saskatoon, and to encourage people of Saskatoon to enjoy many benefits that the river offers us. The main events will take place at the Friendship Park in Saskatoon next to the Meewasin Valley Centre at 403 3rd Avenue South. Here are some of the planned activities for this Sunday:
- Saskatoon Nature Society bird watching walk
- family yoga with Sam Banesh
- water & permaculite workshop
- music and spoken word entertainment
- Friendship Park and river clean up led by volunteers from Trash Dashers Saskatoon
- an evening with the South Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan Rivers – program at the Grace Westminster United Church
