Sunrise in Grasslands National Park – prairie with golden bean and Three-flowered avens in bloom

Prairie with golden bean and  in bloom, Grasslands National Park (East Block). Southern Saskatchewan received unusually high levels of moisture over the winter and early spring of 2011. As a result, grasslands in this part of the province were very green and covered in a lush carpet of spring wildflowers. In June of that year I made a trip to the badlands of East Block near Kildeer. The flowers were beautiful, although not as abundant as I was hoping for – probably the lack of heat had some influence. This image was taken just before sunrise near the area called Zahursky’s Point, south...

Glacial erratics (solitary boulders), Grasslands National Park

Glacial erratics (solitary boulders) in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan This location along the border with Montana is still on a private land, and I had to obtain permission from the land owner to access the site. Tipi rings in Grasslands National Park

Tipi (teepee) rings – a circle of stone remains where a teepee once stood, Grasslands National Park (West Block), Saskatchewan. I found this tipi ring at an exposed butte in southwestern corner of the West Block, right next to the Montana border. This location is still on a private land, and I had to obtain permission from the land owner to access the site and photograph there. The area will be incorporated in the Grasslands National Park if the rancher decides to sell his land to the Park. Back to the Grasslands National Park photo...

Grasslands National Park – foggy dawn in Frenchman River Valley

Grasslands National Park – foggy dawn in Frenchman River Valley

Foggy sunrise over Frenchman River Valley and 70 Mile Butte. Grasslands National Park (West Block) This photograph was taken one cold December morning south of Val Marie. I left my car at the Three Sisters Butte parking lot and walked in the dark to reach the edge of Frenchman River Valley south of the 70 Mile Butte. It helped that I scouted this area before and had the hiking route recorded on my GPS unit. Just before sunrise, the sky turned this marvelous colour. Fog in the valley helped isolate the 70 Mile Butte so it appears as an island in the ocean of fog....
