Picture It – Novice Digital Photography Course

February 11 - April 1, 2015

This photography course will provide participants with a foundation of digital image capture and processing. It is aimed at novice and photographers with intermediate skill levels. The course will take place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and includes seven 90-minute in-class lectures and one outdoor field trip.

The course participants will gain necessary knowledge and skills to understand how digital cameras see and record light, how to visualize and compose their images, and to master the use of natural and artificial light sources. We will cover the essentials of digital image editing, processing, archiving and preparing for print or social media use. The course will inspire and enable you to improve your photography skills and take more meaningful and better photographs. Have a look at a selection of  images created by participants in photography course that ran in the fall of 2013.

Some of the topics covered:

  • fundamentals of digital image capture and how to set the camera for best results (and why)
  • tools of the trade: camera functions explained, proper choice of lenses to tell a story, camera support (tripods), use of filters – when and how
  • it is all about capturing the light (quality, direction, tone or colour temperature)
  • learn how to properly expose your images (magic triangle: aperture / shutter speed / ISO setting)
  • use of natural and artificial light sources (pull that flash out of the camera bag)
  • file formats and image quality – when (and why) to use jpeg or RAW file settings
  • focusing – a dirty little secret camera manufacturers will not tell you
  • creative elements – subject choice, find the best light, adjust composition to make your images look even better
  • digital post-production – what to do after the image was captured
  • digital photography workflow – capture, transfer to computer, organize, archive, edit, output to print or a favourite social media platform
  • how to create stunning landscape panoramas
  • how to prepare for that special wildlife photography trip (or to visit aunt & uncle at the cottage)

Students are required to have access to a digital camera with a zoom lens. Your learning process would benefit from in-class use of a personal laptop computer or a tablet with photo editing capabilities.
