Outdoor and Nature Photography Workshop

Fall colours at Shekinah Retreat Centre - 22. September 2012

I will be leading an outdoor and nature photography workshop at the Shekinah Retreat Centre on Saturday, September 22, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshop will take place in a beautiful natural setting along the North Saskatchewan River approximately 70 km north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

This intensive photo workshop is perfect for a novice photographer with a new camera and a desire to learn how to use it, and for an intermediate level photographer who needs a refresher to get his / her creative juices flowing. You will learn techniques for capturing the best light through proper exposure settings, and how to create dynamic images by applying proven composition techniques.

Some of the topics covered:

  • basics of digital photography – how the digital camera records light and how you can maximise the potential of the technology. JPEG vs RAW format image capture
  • essential camera controls (master the choice of white balance settings, f-stop, shutter speed, and creative aperture control)
  • creative choice and use of lenses
  • essential filters for outdoor photography
  • character of light and light sources (on-site studio demonstration)
  • seeing the light / light in the landscape
  • use of camera flash in the field – control the light output to balance the artificial light source with ambient light
  • basic digital post-processing techniques to prepare images for sharing with friends on-line or in print
  • approaches to sorting and archiving of your images

We will head outdoors for some hands-on photography outing in late afternoon and evening. You will be able to apply the newly gained knowledge into practice through a guided field session, and exchange photo tips with fellow photographers. We will explore and photograph the forested river valley at Shekinah Retreat Centre. This 287 acre (116 hectare) property offers great vistas as well as endless opportunities to capture intricate details in nature at the peak of fall colours.
