A large area of open sand dunes is located about 18 km south of the village of Sceptre (near Leader, Saskatchewan). Follow the signs to “Wildlife viewing area” and park in the designated parking area right next to a large complex of sand dunes. There are a few displays with information about rare plants and animals that live among the dunes. Return to the Saskatchewan photo gallery.

Old Man on His Back ranch buildings

Ranch buildings at the Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area. Photographed one calm evening in June. In 2003 NCC introduced a herd of plains bison on the property and animals can be often seen from road passing through the...

He simplified a definition that appeared in a 1937 Maine Farmer’s Almanac. He wrote “Seven times...

Old Man on His Back – Nature Conservancy seeks conservation volunteers

Nature Conservancy of Canada is hosting another exciting Conservation Volunteer event at their flagship conservation property in Saskatchewan, the Old Man on his Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area near Claydon (southwest of Eastend). Just a few weeks ago I attended a Conservation Volunteer  event at the NCC Maymont property and really enjoyed it. This 3-day event will run over the weekend of August 10-12, 2012 and is full of activities: bird, mammal and wildflower surveys and help with the management of the Plains Bison conservation herd. In the evening, participants will be able to...
