Sunrise in Grasslands National Park – prairie with golden bean and Three-flowered avens in bloom
Prairie with golden bean and in bloom, Grasslands National Park (East Block). Southern Saskatchewan received unusually high levels of moisture over the winter and early spring of 2011. As a result, grasslands in this part of the province were very green and covered in a lush carpet of spring wildflowers. In June of that year I made a trip to the badlands of East Block near Kildeer. The flowers were beautiful, although not as abundant as I was hoping for – probably the lack of heat had some influence. This image was taken just before sunrise near the area called Zahursky’s Point, south...

World Water Day is observed on March 22 every year, to draw the international attention on the relationship between humanity and the water resource. At the end of the winter photography trip to Kootenay Plains, I made a short stop in Banff National Park to photograph Mistaya Canyon covered in fresh powdery snow. Mistaya Canyon is a little brother to the better known Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park. It is a twenty-metre deep slot canyon carved out by ice scraping and water erosion in the underlying limestone rock. The Mistaya Canyon does not receive as many visitors as the Maligne Canyon. However, deep pothole depressions, underground water outlets, and swirling water provide endless opportunities to a photographer who is willing...

At the end of February I had a chance to spend two days photographing in Kotenay Plains near Nordegg, Alberta. This unique wilderness is one of the last undeveloped areas on the easterly slopes of Canadian Rockies, half-way between Jasper and Banff National Parks. Because of the rain shadow effect caused by the Rockies to the west, there is much less moisture compared to other places just an hour drive away. You can see the climate effect on the vegetation – the semi-arid plains rich in plants and animals, and conifer forests that are much thinner compared to forests in the Rockies....

Recently I had a chance to attend a workshop on environmental portrait photography with Dave Brosha, a Canadian photographer based in Yellowknife, NWT. Dave is a rising star in the Canadian photo industry, specializing in commercial, wedding, and portrait imagery. After checking out his on-line portfolio, I got intrigued and decided that it is worth my effort to drive to attend his workshop that took place in Canmore, Alberta. The workshop was hosted by Darwin Wiggett and Samantha Chrysanthou, as a part of their oopoomoo series of public talks. Sam and Darwin posted a great interview with...
