Autumn in Prince Albert National Park

Autumn in Prince Albert National Park

At the end of September I led a photography tour to Prince Albert National Park in northern Saskatchewan. We were fortunate this year to be in the park right at the time when leaf colours were starting to change into the full glory of autumn colours. The weather was also very cooperative; early in the weekend we had some interesting clouds for late afternoon and sunset photography. Saturday was overcast which allowed us to spend more time inside the woods and focus on colour patterns and details on the forest floor. It cleared overnight and on Sunday morning we enjoyed photographing gentle fog rolling over the Waskesiu Lake. Later on that day, we were able to capture various shades of yellow and red against a clear blue sky. Here are a few images captured in Prince Albert National Park that weekend. I would like to thank the photo tour participants for their friendship, laughter and great discussion. Photography field trip to Cranberry Flats Conservation Area

Last week I led an outdoor photography field trip for members of the Saskatoon Nature Society. We had a very good turnout – 17 people showed up. The weather was great; blue skies with interesting clouds greeted us upon arrival, with a bit of cloud cover later on in the evening. Although we did not get a spectacular sunset, a soft light from overcast skies allowed us to focus on details in nature. I took the group down to the banks of South Saskatchewan River to work in the area with a lot of interesting patterns created by water erosion of sandy beaches. A few ravens kept us company throughout the afternoon and I found and photographed a sand bank that resembled the inquisitive birds. Right after the sunset, several hundred sandhill cranes landed on one of the sand banks in the middle of the river. Their distinctive and loud calls filled out the air.  A great ending to a pleasant, and photographically successful day. Here are a few images from this field trip....

Outdoor and nature photography workshop at Shekinah Centre – participant images

The outdoor and nature photography workshop at Shekinah Retreat Centre was  a great success. A full slate of ten people showed up and patiently listened while I was presenting the introductory tutorials. Here is what some of the participants have to say about their experience: – “Thank you for the very educational Photo Workshop…. I learned so much…. just wish my brain could retain all of it. Everything was wonderful, the relaxed class room time, the supper, my only regret is that we didn’t have more time to practise shooting what we learned.” – “Thanks again for freely sharing your wealth of knowledge. It was much appreciated and of tremendous benefit.” – “I enjoyed the workshop. It wasn’t a marathon for me – just a good learning experience. Maybe next time we’ll see more clouds, birds or colour.” – “Enjoyed the workshop; have tried to using the polarizing filter. Sometimes I do like the results, sometimes not so much.” Shekinah Centre is located in the aspen parkland region, right on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. Fall colours were entering their peak that weekend; after dinner we wondered outdoors to soak up the scenery and practice what we learned during the afternoon. Three participants sent me a few images and I am posting a small selection here. The photo credits go to Howard Giles, Hilda Noton and Hans Holtkamp (check out Hans’ fine art bronzes culptures and a selection of photographs).        ...
