Richardson’s ground squirrel at Wanuskewin

Richardson ground squirrel at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Saskatoon Better known under the common name ‘gopher’, ground squirrels were named after the Scottish naturalist Sir John Richardson. They prefer prairie habitat with short grass so they can betters see predators. And there are many: coyotes, foxes, hawks. This fellow had a burrow right beside the Wanuskewing Park interpretive centre. I placed my tripod downhill from where the animal was grazing, to be able to take the image at the same level. When photographing small critters, whether they are animals or children, they look...

Ranch buildings at the Old Man on His Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area. Photographed one calm evening in June. One of the buildings houses a beautiful interpretive centre with stories on history of the ranch and information about wildlife that can be found on the Northern Great Plains of southern Saskatchewan. Nature Conservancy of Canada is managing this 13,135 acre (5,316 hectare) property in effort to protect a piece of fragile mixed prairie grasslands. In 2003 NCC introduced a herd of plains bison on the property and animals can be often seen from road passing through the...

Kayaking on river Kupa, Croatia

On the last day of my holidays in Croatia, I decided to escape the heat and signed up for a kayaking trip down river Kupa. This beautiful river flows through rugged mountains of Gorski Kotar region in central Croatia. The source of river Kupa is located within the boundaries of Risnjak National Park. With its turquoise waters and bountiful plant and animal life, the Kupa spring is one the most beautiful wellsprings in Croatia. First 25 km of the river flow is fast, passing through a narrow canyon of St. Ana. A set of 5 rapids provide for a challenging rafting adventure during high water...

On holidays in Croatia

The web site has been neglected for a while as I was on holidays in Croatia, visiting my family. It was a very peaceful holiday, without too many activities. I had to recharge the batteries after a few busy months. And the school year will be starting again soon. I made a mistake of going to Europe in August. Last few years have been extremely hot, and 2012 was no exception. Air temperature the day I arrived in Zagreb was 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). That is very hot for a person used to gentle 25 C – 30 C summers. Needless to stay, I did not venture out of the house...
