Nature photo walk in downtown Saskatoon

Last weekend I led a nature photography field trip as part of the 2014 Jane’s Walk in Saskatoon. In spite of the cold and breezy weather, an enthusiastic crow of about 20 people joined me for a photo walk along the Meewasin Trail in downtown Saskatoon. We captured the intricate details of budding trees, patterns & shapes in vegetation not yet hidden behind the leaf cover, and enjoyed the view of Saskatoon skyline across the South Saskatchewan River. Here are a few images captured during the photo walk. Many thanks to everyone for supporting the event, and to my friend Ian Preston...

Sandhill Cranes in morning fog

Sandhill Cranes in morning fog

I discovered this group of cranes standing in shallow, partially frozen pond south of Bradwell, Saskatchewan. We were looking for Sharp-tailed Grouse lek and drove past a frozen pond with a flock of over 200 cranes. What attracted me to this scene was a soft, almost surreal appearance of graceful birds enveloped in thick morning fog (we were there before sunrise). I selected a high ISO setting on my camera in hope to get fast enough shutter speed to prevent camera shake. Additional presence of digital noise softened the captured image even more. Recently in print

Last month was quite busy and productive. Several magazine articles with my images appeared in print. I was also interviewed for the Regina Leader Post and a few of my images were published in the paper. One image was used on a front page as a lead to the article. How cool is that? The first article appeared in the Fine Lifestyles Magazine, Southwest edition (Spring 2014). Written by Rebecca Schneidereit, the article titled “The Magnificent Grasslands, Inspiring Art and Conservation” talks about the beauty of prairie landscapes that draws artists to the Grasslands National Park....

Happy first day of spring

Happy first day of spring

Spring is arriving a day earlier this year; vernal (spring) equinox in Saskatoon falls on Thursday, March 20 at 10:57 a.m. CST. March equinox, the date when day and night are same length, marks the beginning of spring in Northern Hemisphere. The term equinox is a derivative of the Latin word equinoxium, which literally means “equality between day and night”. For our friends down under, today is the first day of autumn (fall). The exact day is not the same from year to year. This has to do with the number of calendar days in a year, not the equinox itself. It takes the Earth...
