Kayaking on river Kupa, Croatia

On the last day of my holidays in Croatia, I decided to escape the heat and signed up for a kayaking trip down river Kupa. This beautiful river flows through rugged mountains of Gorski Kotar region in central Croatia. The source of river Kupa is located within the boundaries of Risnjak National Park. With its turquoise waters and bountiful plant and animal life, the Kupa spring is one the most beautiful wellsprings in Croatia. First 25 km of the river flow is fast, passing through a narrow canyon of St. Ana. A set of 5 rapids provide for a...

On holidays in Croatia

The web site has been neglected for a while as I was on holidays in Croatia, visiting my family. It was a very peaceful holiday, without too many activities. I had to recharge the batteries after a few busy months. And the school year will be starting again soon. I made a mistake of going to Europe in August. Last few years have been extremely hot, and 2012 was no exception. Air temperature the day I arrived in Zagreb was 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). That is very hot for a person used to gentle 25 C – 30 C summers....

Old Man on His Back – Nature Conservancy seeks conservation volunteers

Nature Conservancy of Canada is hosting another exciting Conservation Volunteer event at their flagship conservation property in Saskatchewan, the Old Man on his Back Prairie and Heritage Conservation Area near Claydon (southwest of Eastend). Just a few weeks ago I attended a Conservation Volunteer  event at the NCC Maymont property and really enjoyed it. This 3-day event will run over the weekend of August 10-12, 2012 and is full of activities: bird, mammal and wildflower surveys and help with the management of the Plains Bison conservation...

Maple Creek Ranch Rodeo

Maple Creek Ranch Rodeo

I enjoy visiting and photographing rodeos in smaller centres throughout Saskatchewan. My favourites are rodeos taking place in Maple Creek and Wood Mountain. The Wood Mountain Stampede is Canada’s longest continuously running rodeo, this year entering its’ 123rd season. Much longer than a better-advertised Calgary Stampede. This year I decided to try something different. I went to see the 25th Annual Ranch Rodeo in Maple Creek. The Ranch Rodeo is slightly different than your average rodeo. It is designed to replicate the usual...
